Mission Statement
It is the responsibility of the street division of the public works department to provide for the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the city’s transportation system, including the street and pedestrian networks. This division also provides vehicle and equipment maintenance services to other city departments.
Services Provided
TRAFFIC CONTROL - This program consists of the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices (signs, signals, pavement markings, etc.) and compliance with state and federal traffic control regulations.
STREET LIGHTING - The division provides and maintains street lighting in the central business district and contracts with the local electric utility for street lighting in other areas of the city.
SIDEWALK MANAGEMENT - These services include inspection, rehabilitation, and construction of sidewalks, access ramps and curbing in compliance with all ADA standards. (Responsibility for sidewalk maintenance belongs to the abutting property owners.)
STREET OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE - This work includes repair and maintenance of asphalt, concrete and oiled street surfaces with techniques such as asphalt and concrete installation, overlaying, chip sealing, patching, pothole repair, and crack sealing. It also involves bridge inspection and maintenance, snow and ice control, and street sweeping (costs of which are split between the general fund and the storm drainage utility).
VEHICLE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE - The street division repairs, maintains and services most city vehicles.
ADMINISTRATION & PLANNING - This function involves the management and supervision of all the various operations and programs of the division. It also includes many planning and reporting efforts, such as capital improvement planning, pavement management, street and bridge inspection reporting, etc. Other tasks include traffic volume measurement, accident records maintenance, and traffic movement studies and traffic impact analyses.
