Community Services
Mission Statement
The community services department provides programs and activities that improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the community.
Services Provided
ADMINISTRATION services promote the efficient and effective management of staff and budget. They include planning, developing, implementing, directing and evaluation of department goals, objectives, policies, programs and procedures, emergency management, historic preservation, downtown revitalization, and grant and loan research and development.
RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION is responsible for providing leisure, cultural, and recreational activities, including management of staff and programs at the municipal swimming pool.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIVISION is responsible for development and administration of plans and programs for the safety and aesthetic and economic welfare of our community. The division provides staff support for the review and development of the city's comprehensive plan, development regulations, and engineering standards. It also provides technical services both in procuring contracted engineering expertise and in performing in-house engineering work. The division is responsible for right-of-way management, including utility and other infrastructure plan and drawing reviews and construction inspection. The division develops and updates computerized maps. The division enforces adopted ordinances, codes and policies that reflect the environment in which our citizens wish to live. This includes the state building code, local development regulations and public works standards, animal control, nuisance abatement, the federal Community Rating System for flood damage reduction, and the state shorelines management and environmental policy acts. Permits are issued and inspections are made of all work to ensure compliance with all applicable city and state regulations.
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT DIVISION is responsible for the maintenance, improvement and development of all municipal buildings, property and parks, except streets and utilities.
